Honorable Mention
Windy
Lauriette (Laurie Byro)

The noise beneath my seat
of tires and engine and broken springs
keeps me from dozing off completely.

Dad hates music,
turns the radio on anyway.

“Oh, Daddy, I like this one.”

And windy has stormy skies
that captures the buzz off flies…

I am five, he is thirty-something.

Outside this song, wait the future dead.
They line up to greet us, but for now
can’t peer in the windows to scare me.

I snuggle into the blanket my mother
wraps around bony knees.

And windy has wings to fly
above the clouds…

Days before us stretch out
into the blackness of winter morning.

Headlights passing, signal
each year, it will take to find
our way back to this secret ceremony.

Just my father and me,
being brave in the dark.
